15 July 2010 - Blind Tasting of 1970 vintage port

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Do we have a London offline planned yet for July? I know it's getting a bit hot for port by then, but I'd be interested. If we can find a date that works, would anyone else be interested?

Yes! And if it were a Thursday (not 8th) I may even be able to make it as well! Tuesday remains an option as well.

I am on holiday for the second half of July and likey to be very busy in the first half trying to get away so I'm unlikely to be there.

I am, of course, interested -- but have a few existing plans that will cause me to be unable to attend anything on the: 1st-4th, 7th - 11th, or 23rd - 25th.

Hopefully that gives you enough to work with.

I don't know if it would be possible to do on such short notice, but I'd be most interested in a 1980 horizontal. :chef:

Hi Chris,

I am also interested to have an offline in July. I like the 1980 vintage :) (Symington vintage). :D At my flat as far as I know I have Fonseca, Taylor, Croft da Roeda, maybe Sandemann, maybe Quarles Harris and Warre. Sandemann and Quarles Harris I need to check.
I suggest in case Ben comes we fall back to the 1970 Ports
Please understand!

regards

Tuesdays and Thursdays in July which have not already been excluded are:

Tu 6 July - good for AHB
Tu 13 July - good for AHB
Th 15 July - AHB already in London that day
Tu 20 July - good for AHB
Tu 27 July - good for AHB

My preference would be to go for the 15th since I already have to be in London for meetings that day. How does the 15th work for people?

I have very little from 1980, as its a vintage which is overpriced at the moment in my opinion - I would hope to pick some up in a couple of years time at better prices than you can today. All I have is 1 bottle of Dow, 1 of Grahams and 3 half bottles of Smith Woodhouse. Personally, I would rather have 1970 as a theme (Cockburn, Dow, Fonseca, Gonzalez Byass, Martinez, Noval, Warre to choose from)

On 15th July I will be heading north to Rowardennan on the Bonny, Bonny Banks of Loch Lomond to begin my ten days of stomping up hills and along the West Highland Way. It will be a port desert. On some days it will be an alcohol-free-zone. Please, on the evening of 15th July could my port-drinking buddies raise a glass or two for a friend who is suffering in a way that no man should have to suffer?

I hope you all enjoy your evening

We have a quorum.

The venue is The Crusting Pipe (I'll make a booking at some point) on Thursday 15 July at 6:30pm. Since it is a Thursday, we will probably not be able to eat off the Sun-Wed special price menu but will end up paying an extra £10 or so per person for the full price menu, so allow £50 a head for food and corkage etc.

The theme is "Bring a bottle of port from the 1970 vintage, wrapped in foil for a blind tasting".

Confirmed attendees are:
AHB
CSD
BMHR
WS1
CMAG
THRA

Confirmed non-attendees:
DRT (who will be in preparation for his 14 days and 14 nights in the port wilderness)

Crusting Pipe now booked.

Would anyone born in 1970 and attending this offline care to post a list of the 1970 shippers they have tasted so far this year?

Hi Alex

Looks like I will be able to get to this tasting after all , sadly though not till around 9pm. On the positive side if OK will provide a magnum, lucky it is a Thursday night.

Very much looking forward to it, the 1970 vintage is in my view the one you cannot have enough of!

Delighted you can join us after all. We'll make sure your dinner is waiting for you when you arrive - and we'll struggle manfully to help you to work your way through a very generously offered magnum.

Let me know on the day you need some foil to wrap your bottle.

Hi Alex,

met yesterday Tom in TCP with a collegue from work. It looks like Tom will come as well. :D
To keep our thirst for Port for next weeks offline in order we just had some boring older Bordeaux and Burgundy (Branaire Ducru 1978, 1985 La Lagune, Haut Bages Liberal 1986 and a Beaune from 1978 I forgot the name) followed by a half bt of Berry Brothers Vintage Port 2007 (from Grahams). All wines showed brilliantly with the WOTN was the HBL 1986(!).
Apologies for the details, but I thought Chris wanted to know
Have already decided what I want to bring and looking fwd to next Thursday! :D

Julian - would you have the opportunity to make some tasting mats for us?

Attendees are AHB, WS1, THRA, CMAG, CSD and BMHR. Theme is "Blind Tasting of 1970 vintage port" at the TCP on 15 July.

Many thanks!

Sorry, no. Can't do it from an unjailbroken iPhone. Perhaps ask one of JacobH DRT SushiNorth AxelP BenRead? Or be brave and give it a go yourself!

I took a look at the instructions and decided that I was not brave enough to give it a go myself - and didn't have half the software I needed!

Would anyone who knows how to use the code be kind enough to pull together a pdf for me to print? Many thanks.

I can do it. How would you like the glass placement labeled? A, B, C, etc, or by the initials of the person who brought the bottle?

Thanks Glenn. My first (and only) attempt so far elicited the response "well, it's not my style" or similar from JDAW1 so I think I need to practice a bit more before I get into a serious tasting again. Would like to see the .ps file though when you are done so I can compare.

On a blind tasting, our normal approach is to use attendees initials in the place of the port names (ie in the circles.) I am BMHR.

Glenn,

Thanks for the offer of help. I'm happy with Ben's preference to have the initials of the person bringing the bottle in the circle - works for me.

Now I just have to choose which bottle it is that I bring. Wonder where I put that Hutcheson...

I tend to mostly just use Julian's defaults, so I must assume that those are "his style" in some basic sense.

I'll get these done after dinner this evening and post the link here; they should be ready and waiting for you tomorrow morning.

It appears that I do not have the ability to host the .ps and .pdf files anywhere, and the forums won't allow me to upload them either, so they have been emailed to AHB. I think.

Let me know if you'd like any changes - these are pretty plain, but that's also typical of the placemats I create for my own use.
