I know you have planned to hold this tasting at the RAF Club, but can I suggest that you take a look at the Don restaurant or bistro as an alternative venue. The reason I am suggesting them is because this restaurant is based in Sandeman's old London bottling plant and the bistro in the old cellars.

Might be a bit of fun to drink Sandeman ports there. Take a look at http://www.thedonrestaurant.com

I have eaten at The Don once, about 10 years ago (and on someone elses expense account!) and it is somewhere I have always wanted to go back to! Assuming of course it remains as good, or better, than it was!

I had lunch in the bistro today and the food and atmosphere is as good as ever. It's not a cheap venue, a lamb burger with chips and green stuff washed down with a glass of port was £20 but the food was delicious and the nice new government gives me a 50% discount when I eat out in London.

Hi Alex, Axel, Ben

I think doing this tasting at the Don would be a very good idea. I have not been at the Don for a couple of months but used to be a regular and they know me very well (drank their RAYAS supplies and Weinert Malbec 1977s supplies dry as part of the fine wine night offer with a 50% discount :) .
We should try and struck a deal with them.

regards

Alex,

since there was not much of a planning yet, thank you for the hint. Excellent idea. I will try to get in contact with them.

You might want to talk to the management next time you are there (Wolfgang as well) for them to have seen the faces behind it.

Let you know, when I get info.

I recorgnised that the tasting was full right from the start, but - except for very few people - I am missing the same espirit when it comes down to the bottles, so I added an aim for this tasting:

Every participant should be encouraged to bring 2 bottles with him to the tasting:

One bottle should be older than 1963
One bottle should be younger than 1966

Please pm which contributions you are about to make.

I'm afraid the only bottle of Sandeman VP I own is a 1963. Will have a look for another now.

Didn't we agree that if we did a Sandeman vertical it would be in fancy dress?

Woolfgang, Tom and I dined at The Don a few weeks ago and took the opportunity to visit the private function rooms downstairs.

We found them to be ideal for the function however there was definitely a very bad smell from either drains or the air conditioning....we all agreed that this would seriouly affect the wines so can I suggest a further visit nearer the time and a fall back plan to be put in place just in case.

Perhaps it would be easier to set a target - everyone to contribute 1 bottle from the range 1950-1970 so that we can try to taste a complete range of vintages from those years plus, maybe, one or two other bottles?

Updated, Cookie in and more wines. Date changed to late April due to Ben's FG tasting.

I am still looking for 45 and 27, the latter is not available on the market :-(

Finally updated with Victor's wines. Sorry, I do not know how I missed them online. Definitely counting on them.

Cookie; Anything planned to re-visit the Don?

Again updated with some filling the gaps. It is getting more crowded.

Julian, could I please ask you for the placemats along?

First draft of the placemats.
  • Richard Voit?
  • Will decanter labels be needed?
  • Vintage naming:
    • 1911 = Coronation;
    • 1977 = Jubilee.
    Suggestions welcomed.
