TPF Annual Leap Year Tasting - 29th Feb 2012

Posted: 20:44 Thu 23 Feb 2012
by DRT
As some of you might have noticed, we have been unable to hold our Annual Leap Year Tasting for the past three years due to the inexplicable absence of a suitable date in the calendar.

Happily, the people who make diaries have remembered to include Leap Day in this years' calendar so it would be a shame to miss the opportunity.

Date: Leap Day, 2012
Venue: The Bung Hole
Theme: Bring a bottle of Port to share (blind)
Time: 18:30
Attendees:
  • AHB;
  • RLC;
  • DRT;
  • JDAW;
  • RAYC.
Any more?

How about bring a bottle of port that was declared on a leap year.

Feel free to organise a similar event in NYC with that more complicated theme

In case anyone does want to follow g-man's suggestion, here is a list of the years in which the Annual Leap Year Tasting has been possible, with generally declared vintages highlighted appropriately.

2008
2004
2000
1996
1992
1988
1984
1980
1976
1972
1968
1964
1960
1956
1952
1948
1944
1940
1936
1932
1928
1924
1920
1916
1912
1908
1904
1896
1892
1888
1884
1880
1876
1872
1868
1864
1860
1856
1852

It appears that Leap Year Declarations were far more common in the distant past. Perhaps a Leap Year Vertical (1868 to 1924) would be quite good fun? (but not next week as my last Pipe of each are in need of a little more cellar time)

Edited by DRT to avoid criminal charges being brought.

Oh dear. The Lotus 1-2-3 error, previously believed dead, appears again.

I would like to come and suggest TBH.

I don't know what Jdaw1 is referring to, but DRT has 12 hours to correct his post before he is reported for further crimes on the error thread!

[Edit - yes - I am on same page as jdaw1]

Is failing to read basic information a crime?

If failing to read basic information is a crime
and reading is fundamental
then failing of basic information is also a crime

I have no idea what this means.

Next on my drinking list is a bottle of Croft 2004 LBV. Since DRT will never have tasted this port, I shall bring it with me as my contribution to the annual 29th Feb tasting.

... but has it been edited enough...?

In the spirit of precision occaisonally noted on this board, I should point out that all those planning to bring a bottle of Warre 1900 along to this tasting would in fact be in breach of the theme, as 1900 was of course not a leap year; any such invalid bottles should of course be impounded and delivered to the leap year police, in this case me. Thank you.

Yes. Editing other people's posts to hide my error would have been unethical.

Don't forget (I'm sure you hadn't) that we already have a more recent Leap Year Vertical (1948-2012) planned for July; a second flight for the earlier Leap Years on the following day, perhaps?

Yes - given that the correection was issued promptly, I don't think Derek can be penalised for a quote of his original post!

Your spelling is as bad as mine :)
Agreed, I scored a bit of an own goal there since I noticed the error in what must have been the quote rather than the original, thinking it had already been corrected for some other error. Ho hum, no 1900 bottles for me then :(

DRT need not worry as I have tried this wine and it definitely does taste of melons

I am in possession of a Leap Year VP that was given to Team :tpf: by someone we know. It was gifted with no conditions regarding when it should be tasted but I promised that it would turn up at a suitable event.

Would there be any serious objection to this being a bonus bottle?

Would have liked to attend but don’t think I’ll be able to make it, I’m afraid. Will try to join in virtually!

I will be leaving home early tomorrow and will be taking what I need with me. This bottle is therefore "in".

JDAW, could you please do what needs to be done on the placemat front, including a bonus bottle which should be credited to ‟RMW”.

Yes. If the bottle is from a leap year that would be a bonus, by is by no means necessary.
