JDAW’s oddments

Excerpts from a Skype conversation with DRT:
jdaw wrote:I also have a set of bottles that would be an excellent three-man tasting.

If chance should favour the brave, blind for you (and another) but not for me, then I’m on.
DRT wrote:You, me and who?

How many bottles?
jdaw wrote:Whoever. If we should be more than three, some extra supplies could doubtless be located.

There is a risk that some of the six might be imperfect.

Range from excellent to not-so-much.

The vintages are, modulo 4, too non-zero.

But there is no requirement for bottles tomorrow to be from a leap year.

Thursday 22nd March (i.e., tomorrow), at The Bung Hole. AHB is in. DRT is in. JDAW is in. The draft of the placemats reveals an unusual set of port. Anybody else?

Now safely on a train to London, fully decanted and gasping for a cup of tea.

The used parameters for the placemat software are in the thread entitled Parameters for the placemat software.

Aha! I believe that I finally understand the purpose and use of "[(RA) {-0.06 Kern} (YC)]".

Is it to bring the A and Y closer together so that their similarly slanted sides do not appear to create a gap?

Yes.

(I wanted to give you the concise answer before Jacob or Julian wrote a treatise on the subject of typefaces and kerning)

Glenn E. wrote:the purpose and use of "[(RA) {-0.06 Kern} (YC)]".
The single numerical parameter of Kern is a proportion of the font size (notional size, not height). So horizontal movement is, in points, that parameter × the font size (+ve ⇒ rightwards; -ve ⇒ leftwards).

Pleased to see that the thread Parameters for the placemat software is doing the intended job.

PS: the kerning, done thus, works even when the text is being painted in a circle.
