We have had a slow start to 2013

Post by DRT »

Compared to 2012 we have had a ver slow start to the year. We are already 29/365ths of the way through the year and we have only had two Port tastings. Very shoddy.

I hereby declare an emergency!

I am in London Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings next week.

Can anyone see a plan coming together?

I assume you are suggesting 4 producers, 4 vintages, 4 bottle sizes (halves, bottles, magnums, double magnums perhaps) over 4 nights? A scientific experiment into the different aging characteristics covering all major variables. Now which vintage did Uncle Tom mention recently as the first from which he had 0.375 bottlings?!

Regrettably, my attendance unlikely - keeping my powder dry for a (hopeful) pass on 15th February!

4 × 4 × (½+1+2+4) = 120 bottles volume. So what are we to drink on the fourth night?

Hi Derek,

this is good news! This should give enough time to drink some Ports I never come round to. e.g. Magnum of Chruchills Agua Alta 1995. Am free so far most evenings and would be interested in Monday and Wednesday. Tuesday is difficult due to early Gym session Wednesday morning.

regards

We could do a Churchill evening. No need to be complete taste what we have.

I fear my travel plans (Ipswich, Milton Keynes and Warrington) next week make my attendance very unlikely.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

No, seriously, we have been slow compared to last year. This might be due to some of our team being tortured during large parts of January.

good idea, the 1994 Chruchill is very good and drinking well. Sadly I have only halves and they are in Germany. Can bring also the 82 Churchill. Other than that I had in mind to bring to one gathering a Kopke 1977 which I think nobody has tried so far. On the Magnum theme we could also check the newly arrived stock of Sandeman 82 Magnums vs some normal bts of Sandeman 82 I bought recently and were stored in England for a long period of time.
So plenty of interesting themes looming.

Sorry, my week is being messed around by people with other priorities.

I now cannot do Monday or Thursday.

Who can do Tuesday or Wednesday?

If we're going with "some Churchill" then I have 85 and 94 available; other thoughts on possible themes:
- "some 83" (since it's now 30yrs old, the underlooked birthday cousin of 63), I have F83,W83,D83 avail
- "some brown stuff" (tawny/col), I only have Unk40 (unless we know what this is yet, from divided auction last year)
- or any other theme which means that someone brings along a W70 would be great ;)

Due to my being on babysitting duty all weekend, I haven’t been able to access my supplies of Churchill. Sorry.

Hi,

after not having heard a lot again I can definitely rule out to pop by tomorrow. On Wednesday I will be definitely going to The Bunghole and have some port. It is likely two collegues from work will join me drinking the Mag of Churchill 95 and a straight bt of 82. Hope to see Phil and Derek too. Rob sadly ruled himself already out.
If this pace continues we will come at one stage to a complete halt. :(

Wed 06 Feb works for me. I don’t have Churchill to hand yes, I know so either the theme can be broader, or I could adopt. Please instruct.

Wolfgang: for placemats please send names of colleagues.

theme can be broader or you can adopt a port from me if you want. In case of adoption please let me know. E.g. we could do on the side a tasting of halves of Dow Bonfim 86, 88, 90 and 99.
For dinner we can have the Magnum

send the names of my collegues in a PM

I'll be there. I could bring Ch85 and/or Ch94 (one could be adopted if wanted) or alternatively I have a D83 which would fit with the Dow mini-theme; your call/choice.
