70@45 in 2015?

I don't think we need much prodding to run that vintage as a horizontal - perhaps our '70 birth year boys would like to take the lead...?

But isn't Chris back for Wimbledon?

Chris Doty's interest in a 70 tasting noted; but would like to mention that there were already 2 tastings in the last few years including a modest 35bt horicontal (all different ports) in the RAF club and and a second "best of 70s" vintage port tasting in Germany. Both tastings together leaked ~ 35bts out of of my already low stock of ~ 180bts of 1970VP now left  . Some of them are very hard to get like SWC EB, Gould Campell, Quarles Harris, Calem, Niepoort Pota, Niepoort (normal bt), Taylor (Deinhard botteling perfectly cellared, Dolomares botteling) etc..
I am afraid until my replendish stock activities have not been successful it is rather unlikely to organise another 1970 tasting. I am sure for when I turn 50 a tasting will be organised.

If SWC EB means Smith Woodhouse, English bottled, then I have a few very good Wine Society bottled btls.

Have plenty of Gould Campbell, but no Quarles Harris or Calem, and just one Niepoort pota.
180bts of 1970VP now left
274 bottles now left - 26 shippers - could spare up to a dozen bottles for an event

Yep this meant it; sounds good so that we a good base line for a tasting in 2015. With regards to Niepoort pota I have only 2 bts and I think 3-5 normal Niepoort 1970s but do not worry I know a person who has a few more
In case this goes ahead I think I I will depart of one of my Calem 1970s. Quarles Harries we will sort out as well.

I would agree with Wolfgang and rather focus on 1935, 1945, 1975 and 1985, if needed.

Ok - while I appreciate that this has turned into a measuring contest of 1970 stocks, the fact remains that this is the most consistently enjoyable vintage since.....

and remains readily available / affordable in major markets.

If everyone brings one (two?) bottle(s) to share, I promise we'll have a good time. Yes we've had 1970 before, and yes, we'll have it again. Why that creates a problem, is a mystery to me.

No tears. No excuses. Play like a champion!

Chris,

can you please clarify what you hope to get in volved with. A horicontal tasting would comprise of quite a few bts from good provenace for which there is hesitation doing since it was already done a few times before. Just having a tasting of a fair number of 1970 vintage ports is fairly easy.

Stock is the key issue since it has become apparent that most people including myself do not have extensive stock to allow for such extravaganza too often.

I am not a champion; so you must be one then.

Who could turn down a 70 horizontal? If this were to happen, I have T, Cr, W and GC.

As we seem to be pondering ideas for horizontals, I will put forward the idea of an 80s Majors: 80, 83 and 85 for F, T, D, W, G. That would be 15 bottles covering big names and give a chance to re-evaluate which 80s juice merits purchase. I note from a previous tasting that the 83s were a little all over the place, so this would be a chance to reassess, and compare/contrast with 80 and 85.

A matrix tasting, rather than a horizontal.

Why not launch a new thread for this?

(I have ample stocks of all fifteen BTW)

I like the sound of either. Certainly like to come. I'm more likely to have ports to fit from 80s than 70s, of which I am sadly light. Perhaps if the 70s goes ahead I could adopt?

Do you each mean in for the 80s Matrix, or the 70 horizontal, or both??

I agree with Chris that 1970 is one of the finest drinking years, so I would always be up for a 1970 horizontal, large or small.

The 1970 seems to be in a great (and hopefully wide) drinking window at the moment and offers good value-count me in!

I have just checked the wine fridge and I have Dalva, Dow, Graham, Fonseca & Warre immediately to hand. Happy to bring any two of those. Depending on numbers one of the two could be adopted.
