This was a fun evening with a really nice selection of wines, all of which showed very well. It was great to meet g-man, Steph and Ed who were extremely generous with the wines they brought.

Wine-of-the-night for me was the Taylor 1980, followed by the Croft 1970, and the Hedges & Butler 1970 (which just beat a Gould Campbell 1985). The claret (I’m afraid the house name escapes) me was truly excellent. I don’t really drink Bordeaux and this was the first one I’ve tried in ages that really grabbed me and made me realise what it could be like.

This bottle was brought by Tom, so he should be able to confirm but I am pretty sure that it was the Butler Nephew.

In sympathy with current events in the UK, we decided to run our Wine Of The Night competition using three different voting mechanisms:
(1) Our normal 3 points for a first place nomination, 2 points for a second place, 1 point for a third pace - winner is the wine with most points
(2) First past the post - wine with the most first place nominations wins
(3) AV - if no wine has a clear majority of the first place votes then the wines with the least first place votes is (are) eliminated from the competition and the second place votes of the people voting for the eliminated wines are added to the first place nominations for the remaining wines.

The voting was as follows (first place, second place, third place):
JHG - 1955 Dow, 1958 Dow, 1970 Croft
SYG - 1980 Taylor, 1955 Dow, 1970 Butler Nephew
EY - 1955 Dow, 1980 Taylor, 1970 Croft
AHB - 1985 Gould Campbell, 1955 Dow, 1980 Taylor
JGH - 1980 Taylor, 1970 Croft, 1970 Butler Nephew
THRA - 1955 Dow, 1970 Croft, 1958 Dow
WS - 1970 Croft, 1955 Dow, 1958 Dow

The results under the different voting systems was:
(1) Points system - 15 points to 1955 Dow, 9 points to 1970 Croft and 1980 Taylor
(2) First past the post - 1955 Dow (3), 1980 Taylor (2), 1970 Croft and 1985 Gould Campbell (1)
(3) AV - no winner in first round, 1970 Croft and 1985 Gould Campbell eliminated and their votes instead given to the second choices of AHB and WS - which were 1955 Dow. 1955 Dow then had 5 out of a possible 7 first place nominations and was declared the winner.

The conclusion - don't bother holding a UK wide national referendum on the best voting system to use to decide the WOTN.

But what would have been WOTN if the PR-Squared voting system had been used?

Under that voting system all contenders would have been eliminated until Alex Salmand was declared the President of an independent Crusting Pipe.
