Oscar visited London, so the team sampled some VPs and some stuff described as ‟brown sticky stuff”. Some were served sighted, some were blind.

On the day of the funeral of Baroness Thatcher, we drank some good ports.

The placemats hadn’t yet arrived, but we were keen to start.

Even by our usual standards of guessing, we were rubbish. Just two proper points between us of which I scored none.

WOTN was very tight, the D55 just pipping the mixture of NN62 and N63.

A very enjoyable evening in good company with very good ports.

A fitting way to see off the most formidable woman of our time.

It was great to see Oscar again and to share some fine ports with like-minded people. I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and found the opportunity to compare and contrast fine tawny / colheitas against similar age and reputation ruby ports was really interesting. It has confirmed my belief that my preference is for the bottle aged ruby style ports, but I can't deny just how good is Quevedo's 40 year old tawny! I may not be a tawny lover, but that was wonderful.

And, unlike AHB, I voted for it.

I would have voted for it if I had been allowed to finish working my way through all the ports before being forced to vote for my wine of the night! It would have got 1 point from me instead of the Warre '80.

I asked if you were ready, and you said that you were.

And I was - I had tasted all the proper ports that people had not forgotten about and bottled years after the vintage when they were rediscovered as the winemakers were tidying up their cellars.

However, I was surprised and impressed by the Quevedo 40 yo and would have voted for that over the Warre 1980 (which had clearly been bottled, put in a deep freeze somewhere, and then forgotten about!)
