Croft Vertical in Germany, Fri 7th Nov, 2014

Last Friday there was a great Croft lineup in Germany with David Guimaraens as the VIP guest.
Fortunately Tom kindly supported us with some bottles and Julian supported us perfectly again with placemats so that the whole evening was the "usual" success. Thanks to you two.
Here is the lineup:

To summarize this: Perfect old Vintage Ports with 1945 in the Pole positition. At 1975 (one of the best 1975s, although this is a bit being the one-eyed amongst the blind) to 2003 there are certain quality issues. 2003 and 2011 fully on track again, 2007 not in this league.

An excellent event, with several TPF-ers in attendance (and a couple more people who will hopefully now join the forum). Some superb port on show, and the first time for me that the classic style of oranges has been clearly on display as a house style in several years. Some highlights/lowlights:
1917 - soft, very very long, with slight burnt edge to the flavour; delicious
1927 - lovely underneath, but slightly flat on top (nowhere near as good as the last bottle I had, which ranks as one of my best ports ever)
1935 - full, full of oranges, and very very very very very long; superb.
1945 - massive, full of oranges, and went on for ever.
1963 - (lowlight) absolutely buggered, smelt foul, didn't really want to taste it, though I did; hint of delicious underneath, awful on top.
1966 - delicious
1977 - some TCA, though still good
1982 didn't show as well as usual, but the Roeda '83 was surprisingly tasty (in fact all the Roeda's were decent drinking, slightly softer than the full declaraions, but enjoyable; note that the '78 needed longer in the glass to settle) and the '85 showed well. The '91 was good though still a touch immature for my taste, and of the newer wines the 2003 & 2011 seemed the best.

True, 70 was the WOTN, but the 45 was my winner and I was just posting my reflections.
