Sun 17 May 2015 (NYC): 'Atonal Port' Blind tasting

A lovely time was had last night at Left Bank in NYC as six of us (and a few drop-ins) enjoyed 8-ish Ports. The tasting was held blind, with submissions curated by jdaw1, and there were many surprises and few correct guesses. All brought a bottle, with a few gifts added in.

Warre's 1984 LBV
Barros 1980 VP
Hardy's 1978 "VP" (Australia) -- Dark horse of the evening
Kopke 1974 Colheita
Da Silva 1908 Colheita(?) (submitted as a gift to the tasting by g-man -- THANK YOU! We wish you could have joined us)
Graham 1982 Colheita
Warre's 1986 LBV
Calem 1977 VP (an extra from Dave -- Thanks!)

The wine of the night was the 1908 Da Silva -- universally appreciated but rarely selected as #1, it garnered more points than any other wine present. Graham 82 Colheita was #2, and there was a broad tie for 3rd (and as soon as I get my actual notes from home, I'll update this with the details).

If someone could auto-generate the TN threads for us, it would be appreciated.

the da silva should have been the vp, but I will submit that it reminded me more of a madiera on my notes.

i decanted it at 10:30am est, it was already top shoulder fill, threw a good chunk of sediment.

and there was a g-man's share that took off some more from the fill ;-)

the cork was branded da silva

however the vintage was rubbed off in the process of opening bottle.

t-stopper was mine since the cork didn't last.

Thank you to everyone who made this happen - a very, very successful tasting which is hopefully the first of many to come. I will post photos and create threads soon!

Process manual rather than automatic, but done anyway.

Umm chaps. Wasn't AJ da Silva running Noval in 1908? Could you have just drunk the Noval 1908 vintage port?

Sure, but this was a colheita.

Because it says so in the title of its TN thread.

Sorry everyone. It's been a busy, not to say tumultuous couple of weeks. I promise to update details soon. We had a lovely time though!
