2000 Chasse Spleen

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

I remember that we had a 2000 vintage claret - but what was it?

Chasse-Spleen, and it was very nice - and good value at near retail price 88)

Also at our table. It's excellent stuff I think.

It was indeed rather nice, good to drink now but with plenty of stuffing to allow it to continue to develop for quite a few years yet.

I was appropriately impressed and wanted to have a record here of what we drank and what we thought of it. Thank you gents.

I too thought it very good. Lovely big mouthful. Richer than I might expect for a 2000. Lots of everything; wood, fruit, tannin it's all there. I bet Alex would give it until 2020 and beyond, and it is remarkably young tasting for a 14 year old wine. If I was pressed to find a quibble it may have had a hint of the burly rustic about it. But then as a man from Somerset I can hardly object.

That would attract shorter odds than Usain Bolt racing me for a bus. Alex's daily drinkers are 30+ years old, the good stuff gets a decade or two more.

Oh yes, just finishing up his 29s while he waits for the 28s to come round.

Apparently the right bank 28s aren't quite ready yet so he might have to dip into the 29s a little earlier than planned

In general I find the '28s an '29s are starting to fade. I prefer to drink the '34s and '45s these days - although I am finding the '61s an '66s are starting to drink quite well with food that can help to soften the tannins.
