The Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest is "a whimsical literary competition that challenges entrants to compose the opening sentence to the worst of all possible novels." Anyone can submit an entry (or several) and the site is a treasure trove of exceptionally bad opening sentences of fiction.

I would urge all members of TPF to compose a couple of opening sentences and submit these. I'm sure the great minds of TPF could come up with some supreme witicism, perhaps including port, shrouded in an atrocious opening sentence. Look forward to seeing your entries and names in the list of winners.

The 2007 winner is a real gem.
