Champions' League

Post by KillerB »

Despite Conky's firmly held belief that I am totally ABU I was willing them on last night. Even though the last ten minutes was a sustained bombardment of feeble attacks by Barca, Man U looked like winners most of the time.

Even Wes Brown had a good game.

Tonight, I will be supporting Liverpool, even with their hilarious ownership, rather than the Russian oil Billionaire's plaything.

An all England final - woo hoo!

Although to lose to them would be cause for suicide....

I'm with you. The ecstasy of beating the Vermin in a Champions League Final would actually eclipse Cantona scoring in the last minute in 96 to beat them and secure the Double!

Happy Days.

Strange game. Chelsea won but only just.

Now, which hat am I going to wear for the final? My ABU or my ABC hat?

I've just discovered that on my new Internet radio that I can pick up Setanta English audio commentary.

On 21 May the Chennai Superkings (wonder who their sponsors are?) are playing the Bangalore Royal Challengers and full commentary is on Setanta.

Alex,

when your old, with a blanket over your knees, and having some soup on the veranda, at the old folks home, I worry that the Nurses wont have a bloody clue what your waffling on about!

I just hope for your sake, Derek and Julian are sitting on adjoining wheelchairs, at least you'd have similar minded company. :D

Hmm. It probably would have helped if I had written that the game in question was cricket. The two teams I mentioned are teams in the Indian Premier League 20Twenty cricket league. The games so far have been quite exciting and take up less time than a European Champion's 1-1 draw and extra time. If you get the chance and have 3 minutes to spare, take a look at some of the highlights on their web-site. Some of the cricket might even approach being exciting!

Now that is a scary thought. Can you imagine the conversations we would have? I shudder to think.

I like the idea. AHB can do Soup TN's, Jdaw can produce a new Placemat for each meal and I can use my best chat up lines on the nurses. It's a winning combination.

Once a month we can ask the nurse to wheel us through to Ward 101 so that we can wave to Conky through the small window of his padded cell where he will be pacing slowly up and down wondering what happened to all his Martinez 85

Do they keep the temperature in those padded cells at a constant 12C? Are they dark and vibration free? Are they maintained at around 80% humidity? If so, I can feel a plan coming on...

I booked a place there some time ago.

They provide wicker wheelchairs, three wheels with a steering handle. The chairs are pushed by refined but attractive nurses wearing traditional capes. The usual route is along a terrace and through some ornamental gardens.

Most mornings one can enjoy a glass of madeira with seedcake whilst reading the Morning Post. Dinner can be a little fraught as residents cruelly challenge newcomers to blind tastings of each wine with each course.

They have quite a good cellar although there is talk of locking it before they admit many more Port Forum inmates.
It may be drivel, but it's not meaningless.

the “refined† part of “refined but attractive†

Post by jdaw1 »

Foolishly, I had been ignoring this thread.

What Madeira do they serve in the morning? (If the answer is a respectable Malmsey, and the seedcake is optional, then I suppose it might be acceptable.)

I am still debating with myself whether the “refined† part of “refined but attractive† is good or bad. I fear that its Victorian overtones preclude naughtiness. Which would be important, even if, setting aside greater optimism, all I can manage is a glass or few more Malmsey than my official allowance.

Julian,

This 'naughtiness' of which you speak? you do know it's a Retirement home, so naughtiness is mostly in the mind.

They do give the old Portaholics cocoa and viagra, last thing at night. The cocoa to help you sleep, and the viagra to stop you falling out of bed.

Even old and dotty in a retirement home I’ll dream of naughtiness such as “a glass or few more Malmsey than my official allowance†.

Apart from the embarrasing burst of laughter that reading this caused, this does sound like my kind of retirement home. I'm sure that I could persuade Derek to produce a label for my birth certificate that would allow me to start there tomorrow!

The response to my post was so encouraging that I made enquries about a discount for a block booking. The answer was encouraging; some input from the financial wizard members should help make our capital go further.

I have tried to interview some nurses but with disappointing results. Who is cupid stunt?

Dare we be proscriptive about which madeira and when? The malmsey is probably a must before lunch. Is there a regime to decide which port with which meal or which day? For example, gravadlax with a fino, stewed pigeon with a Chateauneuf then cheeseboard. Over to you for the port. Let's enjoy our dotage.
It may be drivel, but it's not meaningless.

I think when they serve the tinned potatoes and spam fritters we must insist on a Fonseca 1963. More exotic dinners, such as liquidised cabbage with chicken dippers and baked beans would be more suited to a slightly chilled 1937 Niepoort Colheita.

Perhaps Tom should go ahead with his plans to buy an old Quinta and we can set-up the care-home there? From what I have witnessed, Portuguese women are far more ameinable to having to run around after a bunch of lazy old men than their British counterparts.

This is starting to come together quite nicely. We could even go electric wheelchair treading at harvest time each year. 88)

The excitement builds.

If Ronaldo has one of them games, it could be an unforgettable Season, and Golden Double.

I have to say that Senior Teves seems to be trying to muscle in on the act. Should be fun.

Are the Sky Blues still hoping for a place in Europe?

I am not exactly proud of my team's achievements this season in terms of league position but cup devilment has been fun. We survived and I will take that with the cup victories. Glories come and go, enjoy them when you have them, no need to hunt them.

Very true. It is good to see teams from the lower divisions do well in cup competitions. Where did the Sky Blues get to this year?

Not very far but we did knock Blackburn out of the FA Cup and Man U out of the League Cup.
