Should we limit membership???

Before you all shout me down, hear me out.

I would like as many members as we can have, but real members.
I think we should say that if you dont post at all in a 3 month period(maybe 6 months), your membership lapses, but your welcome to re-join.

I'm actually proud of the fact we have developed a strong membership who do Post, and would rather keep the number at say 50, who are active, that 300, when 80% are not.

Right, you've heard me out, now you can shout me down. :D

I'm with Fred on this one. It doesn't hurt me one bit if people don't post often. They may still be reading, and being registered has the benefit of seeing new topics since your last visit.

I'm with Fred and Ronnie on this one. We have ket this site clear of unreal registrations and have 36 members who have all posted some contribution to the site. I don't think any of these should be removed as doing so will only cause problems if they wish to rejoin.

Seeing new topics, and being alerted to new developments …

Seeing new topics, and being alerted to new developments in topics being watched.

Provided their profiles aren’t linking to or promoting anything undesirable.

Always gonna have more lurkers than posters, just the nature of the beast. So long as they arn't porn sites and the like, let em all sign up. hopefully one day they will contribute.

excuse me while I daydream...

The reason why I don't post much is that I'm just a beginning port lover. I love the wine to bits, but am still very much in the early learning stage. In the few weeks since I discovered this forum I've learned so much interesting facts, that I'm glad I registered.
So on the part of the 'port knowledge' I'm afraid I don't have anything new to add.

On the part of the 'tasting notes', I'm not yet self insured enough to post any.
Your tasting notes, however, are a welcome guideline to buying any VP's.
Each time I consider buying a bottle, the 'tasting notes' thread is the first thing I visit.

The fact that I don't post anything (yet) doesn't mean I'm a 'sleeping' user; I visit this Forum every day.
I'm sorry that you guys don't see any posts by me, but I'm here. :(

write what you see, smell, and taste

Tasting notes are easy: write what you see, smell, and taste. Don’t be afraid: we won’t mock anything more specific than “fairies dancing†.

Rubby,

We all start with small tasting notes. As a first step, please just post a tasting note of what you drank and what you thought - even if your thought is "I liked this, I will buy more" or "I liked this, but it was too expensive to buy more".

Even a tasting note that is as simple as this is interesting. You may well be drinking ports that I don't normally get to drink and so it is always good to know what others think.

You will be very surprised at how easy it is to write a tasting note and how interesting it becomes when other people ask questions about your note.

Alex

PS - no we shouldn't restrict membership of the site to only those who actively post. Even lurkers are welcome as they may become tomorrow's poster, even if for just one post.

Alex,

I have completely accepted defeat on my idle thought. But I would have to say, the idea was about members. Lurkers and Guests are very welcome, even in my wierd world. I was just hoping the minor benefits of seeing updated Threads and being able to see more details of members, and contact details, would encourage folk to be members and be active.

As I say, I've given up on this idea, but saying Lurkers wouldn't be welcome under my odd scheme, wasn't quite right.

OK. I fully accept that my interpretation of your idle thought was too harsh. Lurkers are always welcome and are to be positively encouraged to join in the debate when they feel comfortable to do so.

Many spammers attempt to register. We identify a goodly proportion of them, but not necessarily all. Effective a few months ago non-posters receive a PM asking whether they want the login, and informing them that if they don’t reply within a few weeks, they will be deleted. There is no need to post, but there is a need to prove that they are non-bots.

So far, none have replied. Many deletions have ensued.
