1970 Noval

Post by jdaw1 »

1970 Noval, consumed Thursday 14th February 2008, and from the collection of Jay, who did double-duty as our excellent host.

Clear red at center, brown at edge. Very light bouquet. Such taste as there was entirely dwarfed by the heat, and to a lesser extent acidity. Entirely unremarkable basic vintage port, acceptable quaffing stuff. But a great house like Noval should have done much better in a great year like 1970. Uncle Tom Score 4/4.

In subsequent discussion about whether one always wants to drink good port (is that a hard question?), Alex B said that the simplicity of the Noval 1970 meant that it doesn’t distract from whatever else one is doing. It is, he said, a good port to drink while watching the Superbowl. So it was generally acclaimed as “Superbowl Port†.
