2015 Niepoort

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Cask sample. A youthful purple in colour but surprisingly not quite opaque at the centre. A touch tanky on the nose but otherwise showing very little. Neutral at first on the palate this rapidly grows bigger and bolder with a smooth texture. The tannins are soft at first but grow firmer and more persistent yet always wrapped and hidden by damson-esque fruit. Air on the palate allows the floral complexity to develop slowly and the whole eventually turns into a big and bold mouthful of purple hibiscus flowers. Slightly dry on the aftertaste and a lingering finish. Slightly less impressive than the Bioma. 90-92 with at least another 6 months to develop in cask. 90-92/100. Tasted 07-Nov-16.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
