1994 Burmester Vintage Port

Post by RonnieRoots »

We drank this last Tuesday at Stevie's place. I gave this port to Stevie for his graduation in 1999. Our near leave to Oman seemed a good opportunity to finally open this port. Expectations were low, as it tasted rather tired on a previous occasion (bottle from different source), and because it had not been stored very well for the first couple of years.

We were quite amazed by the dark and young colour when we poured this into the decanter. Immediately after decanting it smelled of opulent fruit, medium sweet and fresh. A pleasant surprise.

After a couple of hours of decanting the port had lost some of its initial fruit on the nose, but the taste was very fine. Medium bodied, with warm fruit, some tobacco, a very nice spiciness and good freshness. Tannins were integrated nicely and it seemed like the perfect moment to drink this port. The decanter was emptied pretty soon without much difficulty.
