Opened for dinner at O Paparico to share with Roy Hersh in celebration of his birthday where we consumed S55. S57, S66, S67 and Pinto dos Santos 1963. The darkest of the Sandeman ports was the 1967, followed by the 1957, the 1955 and the 1966. The Pinto dos Santos 1963 was about the same colour as the Sandeman 1957.
Deep red with much less brown / bronze toning that the older Sandeman bottles drunk this evening; 60% opaque. Lots of attractive honey and herbs on the nose with sweet tones of lavender and bletted quince. Tick in texture, rich and concentrated flavours like an orange reduction. Very pleasant palate with hints of the tannins which are hanging around in this wine. The palate has a good balance and a nice fragrance to it. Dry tannins dominate the aftertaste and deliver a lovely finish full of sweet and sticky fruit. 90/100. 20-Jun-17. Decanted 3 hours.
