Some of the usual suspects gathered at the White Horse in Newport, Essex for the traditional Port Forum Christmas gathering to which were brought the traditional ‘Unknown shippers and their peculiar friends’. Delights of the evening included the very fine fillet steaks, the sparkling company of Jo (pub manager), Mel (on duty for the evening) and Jane the chef.
Very light colour, pale orange; 10% opaque. Gently oxidised nose showing a little tired fragrance. Soft and sweet entry but this is dry and tired, with the profile dominated by dry wood flavours. The wood flavours soften and improve on the palate with air, with the wood being replaced by sage and basil. Although tired and dried out, the acidity gives a good vibrancy to the flavours. A pleasant aftertaste with a huge finish of Angostura bitters that is persistent and very long. The balance and the acidity of the port did make me wonder whether this had been fermented dry before being fortified. 88/100. 21-Dec-17. Decanted ½ hour.
