1991 Horizontal Tasting - Monday 9th December 2019 - B&F

Post by winesecretary »

I have only very rarely tasted 1991s but, when I have, I have felt that it has perhaps got slightly worse press as a vintage than it deserves.

To assess this theory we will taste 1991s on Monday 9th December 2019 in the Red Room at the B&F, 1800 for 1830. At uncle tom's request, I clarify that TPF'ers attending are requested to double-decant the wine they are bringing no later than 1830 on Sunday 8th and leave it to breathe overnight.

My original intention was to make this tasting single blind but I have eventually concluded that trying to decide which wine is which may be a distraction from trying to decide which wine is best. So, sighted it is.

Since the B&F closes at 1000 on Mondays, we might each be able to take home a spare glass or two from our respective bottles for contemplation the following day, especially since we will be tasting 16 wines.

I shall aim to arrive about 1715 to start checking glasses and pouring the first few out. I shall attempt to print placemats, and will send out a distress call if I fail.

Please let me know by PM if you don't want your standard food order by Wednesday 1200, as I will file it Wednesday afternoon.

Would it just be ‘91s or would this extend to the ‘92s that Fladgate declared? I have F92 I could bring.

In my email I promised I would let you know what I had from 1991.

Reasonably accessible I have Gould Campbell, Morgan, Vesuvio and Warre.

Let me know which of these you'd prefer me to contribute.

@ Doggett: Ck we already have, but there will be further opportunity for adoptions idc...

@ Alex M: G confirmed (adoption)

@ flash_uk: Just 1991s for this tasting, AHB is planning a 91 vs 92 separately. [There will also likely be a 1992 horizontal tasting next year, for the same reason as this one, I think the only 92 I currently have is T...]

@ CPR 1: Tv please

@ AHB: GC please

Are you aware that on Mondays the B&F closes at 10pm; on other weekdays at 11pm. If you were not so aware, please allow a suggestion that this be moved forward one day, to Tuesday 10th December 2019.

I was so aware; the (I accept excessively wordy) initial post mentions the issue. The rationale for the Monday is in fact multifold (i) as noted in that first post, we might get to take a glass home for mature consideration (ii) a Monday night was one when the B&F, despite it being 'Christmas Party Season' did not discernibly blench at the prospect of (a) TPF turning up (b) providing 200-odd white wine glasses for us to play with from 5pm (there is a lunch booking in the Red Room until then); (iii) tertiary but not irrelevant reason- my guest is already booked to fly back to the US on Tuesday 10th December, for non-port-related reasons...

Hi guys,
Could you put me down too please?
I could offer Fonseca or Taylors, assuming these Qunitas are acceptable?

@NickA - I will, and yes please - perhaps one of FG or FP (I think both were produced in 1991), since we already have Tv and the TTF is pretty hard to find so fails the 'reasonably available' test. Let me know which of FG and FP you intend to bring.

Please put me down as (very) tentative.
Have W91, and my spreadsheet says I still have a bottle of Morgan '91, though I'm not convinced I do...
