1912 Cockburn VP

Post by DRT »

From the tasting on 18 Mar 08 - served blind

Light colour, slightly darker than the 1960.

Starting to caramelise on the nose. Smooth entry with a hint of oranges. Hot after a few seconds then a delicious mouth-watering finish.

I guessed Taylor 1947. Not even close

Was this from the same lot as the one we tasted at the Chistmas offline? Boy, I loved that bottle!

I just visited the Cockburns cellars and they have a lot of ancient bottles over there - I guess for sale as well.

So we should go for a Cockburns vertical in September!!!

My tasting note taken at the time of the offline:

Pale barley sugar colour, very light centre and clear rim. Tobacco and caramel or creme brulee nose with Grand Marnier orange spice on top. Very sweet and elegant entry but with tannins and some bitterness in the midpalate. Good acidic core and then lots of candied citrus fruit coming through a brown sugar surround. Super aftertaste, dominated by quince and citrus peel, that lasts a long, long time before fading away to a mild tobacco. Terrific wine, superb drinking and not one that needs to be rushed. 7/7 or 93/100. Drunk on 18 March 2008 after 1½ hours of decanting.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

The remaining bottles in the batch will now feel more loved as they will have this applied to them...

Derek: you should sign the labels.

Derek: you should sign the labels. Your labels should state, in 5-point writing, “Purchased <where purchased, lot #s> on <date>. New label by <full name not on public forum>†. If the bottle’s current owner should die before drinking, the next owner will be grateful.
