1870 Agrellos

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Agrellos 1870. A bottle acquired by WHW at auction in Portugal and shared over lunch in Taberninha do Manel with GEE, Eric Ifune and David Spriggs.

Decanted at 10.15, returned to the bottle at 11.45 and drunk about 13.00. Dark and thick colour with an olive green rim; slightly cloudy and opaque. A little vinagrinho on the nose, dark toffee. Searing acidity, no thickness to the texture on entry. Grapefruit oil, some honey and a lot of grapefruit acidity. Floral tones to the aftertaste, fragrant with lots of grapefruit acidity. A lovely tawny with considerable age and massive acidity. 92/100. Drunk 03-Oct-21.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Is this a Colheita? I won 3 bottles of the Agrellos 40 yo tawny at auction last year and tried one with friends a few months ago. It was delicious. I had never heard of this producer before and never see anything on the auction market.

From the appearance of the bottle and the taste of the wine we were pretty sure it was a colheita, although there was no label to tell us definitively.
