1958 Real Companhia Velha, by the glass from Garrafeira Nacional in the Ribeira Mercado in Lisbon, €46 for a 50ml pour. Deep orange in colour, the tone of 50 year old oak. Sharp rhubarb on the nose, a little malt vinegar. Smooth on the palate, rhubarb and brown sugar, none of the vinegar hinted at on the nose. Warm aftertaste, mint and brown cane sugar lead to a long bruised apple finish. The sour nose on this wine is at complete odds to the rather nice, mature and smooth palate. Fully mature, gently sliding into obscurity. 81/100. Tasted 01-Mar-24.
