60/63/66 Horizontal .... 23rd July 2024

Post by mcoulson »

.
This group has provided me with many new experiences and a massive amount of knowledge and I’ve enjoyed every moment of it. Every tasting is a pleasure and each one feels more over the top than the last one … I give you Harry’s afternoon experiment with Tappit hens !

In an attempt to provide something different and I’d love to claim ownership to this idea but it’s actually come out of Julian’s head (!!) …. How about a 60/63/66 horizontal

We find 5 producers that we can between us provide all three vintages which gives us 15 bottles, I’ll put in two bottles to the event so everybody else is on one bottle per person

Looking at the schedule it appears that July is rather empty right now and it’s also my birthday in July so I’d like to suggest Tue 23rd July

We can also, if the general view is such and we have the bottles, extend this event to be 6 producers, it would need three other people to step up and offer two bottles tho.

People wanting to attend who can provide bottles would need to take priority over those needing to adopt and we can choose the lineup after we know whats we have between us all. Let me know what you can offer and I'll work out what our options are and we can all choose the line up.

Well done Julian for this suggestion ...

Date: Tue 23rd July 2024:

PM me with what you might be able to help out with and I'll apply the info to this chart and we can then decide what we can do

Green is multiple people have a bottle
Yellow is just one person
Blue is in bond
Orange is the original tasting that Alex talks about

Yes please.

This is a very similar theme to the first tasting we ever organised, in October 2005 before the Port Forum was created.

I’ll have to try to find a report on the evening, but if I recall correctly, we had Dow, Fonseca, Graham and Sandeman.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

I’ve found the organising thread for the tasting at the Crusting Pipe on Sunday 6th November 2005.

We tasted 1963, 1966 and 1970 from Fonseca, Graham, Sandeman and Taylor.

If I get time, I’m sure I wrote a review of the event which I will try to find.

It turns out it wasn’t me who wrote the article, it was Roy Hersh and he published it in his May 2006 For The Love of Port newsletter. He has kindly given me permission to reproduce it in this thread.

Is there millage in moving this event to the 30th July ?

This gives Neil & George a chance to join in ??

Can everyone make the 30th ?

Not I.

Also, is it optimal to have such a tasting in the peak of summer heat?

Alas, couldn’t make 30 July either. I have a hideous summer of work so am likely off tastings after 11 June (which I will have to leave quite early to get the last train to Rutland) until early September.

since moving does not save George from himself and would make Charles sad I think we should stick with the plan.

I've added idj123 and changed the bottle graph thingy ....

Great to have you on board Christopher ....

We have a great selection to choose from but if you have told me about what you 'have' and might have 'something else' can you have a hunt for the something else please ?

At the moment we can do six flights Croft, Fonseca, Noval, Offley Boa, Sandeman & Taylors but we are relying on a small number of people ....

Please check your Tardis if any of you have them and if thats not the case please look behind the settee and fridge
