Old & Odd, New York, Friday 7th November 2008

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

I can't find the original thread for this tasting, but there was a tasting arranged in New York in May (if I recall correctly) that was postponed at my request so that I could attend.

I will be in New York on the 15 and 16th of October. Is anyone interested in resurrecting this planned offline?

Alex

Considering i will have just gotten home from my trip overseas 3 days earlier and Alex's L.A. offline on the 21st., I will no doubt be broke and not able to fly across country again for another offline, as much as I want to. So unless something changes, I most likely won't be able to make this.

I own four suitable bottles — adopt from me.

Jay wants Thu 16 Oct, and g-man probably shouldn’t come on either date. That suggests Thursday 16 October 2008.

I can make Thursday 16th, but do not yet know where I will need to be on Friday 17th or whether that day will be the day I am deposed by plaintiff's counsel.

Bearing in mind I may need to have my wits about me on the Friday, I would very much prefer to have the tasting on Friday evening, if that fits with the social plans of others.

I have a bottle of "Refreshed 1896" port shipped under the name of Garcia. I know nothing about this bottle but would welcome an excuse to open it in the company of others who would find it interesting. This was the bottle that I was hinting of bringing to keep Jay's Schofield from being lonely.

Fridays are generally better for me, I can 1)drink more 2) stay out later and 3)not have to go into work the following the day.

Friday sounds good to me. But there has been such a huge outbreak on this forum of sensible statements about when to drink port that I am not sure this is really theportforum.

We have a date. Title edited to “Old & Odd, New York, Friday 17th October 2008†.

Jay: this thread has mentioned that Friday evening is a good time to drink port. That view is fully consistent with official :tpf: policy. Other good times to drink port, also consistent with official :tpf: policy, include Monday lunch, Monday afternoon, Monday evening, Tuesday lunch, …, Friday afternoon, Saturday lunch, …, and Sunday evening. This would not be the real ThePortForum if any of these self-evidently excellent times were widely denied.

That sounds like we just drink too much, how about any day that ends in a "y"

I called up Henry's End and they're willing to host us late on friday for roughly 8 (as in 6 or 10 range) people.
They said if we come in at 9pm we'd get the restaurant for the rest of the night.

Corkage is 25$/bottle

and the wild game festival starts in 2 weeks.

Jeff, do I understand correctly that we could not start until 9 pm? That's too late for me, although the restaurant looks quite tempting.

Unfortunately i don't own the restaurant so I couldn't say =)

But the guy that picked up the phone did strongly hint at "later" in the night for fridays that I took to mean 9 =) ... I'm sure we can get away with 8:15-8:30

I need to start at about 6 pm. I have a memorial service that I am attending in Westchester the next day and cannot burn any midnight oil.
My vote, therefore, would be to keep looking for another venue.

I'm a bit hacked off, but it seems that I will need to move my US visit back by a couple of weeks. It now looks like I will be in LA on November 2-4 and in New York on November 5-7.

While this will give T-Bird another shot at attending, do these dates work for other folks in New York?
