1985 Fonseca vintage port

Post by uncle tom »

I've had some of these for some time, but don't think I've ever opened one.

As it's a while since i last tackled anything from '85, I thought I'd indulge one.

Decanting was very slow, as the bottle had at some point in its life been stored on it's head, with the result that flakey sediment immediately emerged, blinding my decanting funnel..

Colour very dark - in the decanter almost black.

First sip - no bottle stink, fruity, classic Fonseca - very promising.

D + 12 Lovely nose, fruity wine.

D + 24 Little changed, excellent sipping.

But this is nowhere near mature, another ten years at least is required.

This is a classic Fonseca, one of their greats. To score it almost warrants a 9 for immediate gratification, but I'll give it an 8 for being so immature still.

This could easily earn a ten score in a few years time, but for now I'll be a little more cautious

Score 8-9

You should have read the numerous TNs here before opening it and we would still have one more F85 in the world to be enjoyed when they are ready to drink

Anybody could have wrote:Good. Huge. Black. Still closed. Needs another decade, when it will be great.
If I didn’t know better I’d think that somebody had just opened a Fonseca 1985.

Not ready to drink is right. This could be the best '85 of the vintage.
