1996 Burmester Colheita (bottled 2007)

Post by JacobH »

Bottled in 2007. The colour is still quite dark throughout, with a raspberry-coloured tint on the edge. I still don’t drink enough of these to get much on the nose beyond general ‟tawny”. On first tasting, the sugar immediately stuck out; with that thick sweetness I usually associate with fudge appearing in the back of the mouth. Subsequent tries brought out more of the subtlety; the youthfulness is certainly obvious, especially in the middle of the mouth (perhaps something like a lychee was detectable). The after-taste has quite a bit of smoke to it and enough tannins remain to give it some body. Perhaps it would have benefited from another year in wood? Otherwise this is good stuff; characterful and interesting.
