Sat 18 Apr 2009, New York: Classic years of T, F, W

Post by jdaw1 »

Renamed from ‟Let’s all drink JDAW’s port (New York)” to ‟Apr 2009, New York: Classic years of Taylor, Fonseca, Warre” after RonnieRoots’ first post.
And on Wed 17th Dec renamed from ‟Apr 2009, New York: Classic years of Taylor, Fonseca, Warre” to ‟Sat 18 Apr 2009, New York: Classic years of T, F, W”.

It is possible that, some time in 2009 Q2, I shall be returning to the old world. One possibility is that all my port could travel with me. Another is that some of it forms the core of some tastings, here in the new world under its new President(-to-be). Possible themes include:
  • 1977 Horizontal:
    • Warre;
    • Taylor;
    • Fonseca;
    • Quinta do Cachão;
    • Smith Woodhouse;
    • Niepoort;
    • Ferreira.
  • Classic years of Taylor, Fonseca, Warre:
    • 1948:
      • Taylor;
      • Fonseca (not necessarily available might be reserved for non-NY use);
    • 1963:
      • Taylor;
    • 1966:
      • Warre;
      • Taylor;
      • Fonseca;
    • 1977:
      • Warre;
      • Taylor;
      • Fonseca;
    • 1985:
      • Warre;
      • Fonseca.
  • Graham:
    • 1970;
    • 1985;
    • 1994.
Are any folks around here willing to help with the drinking? (An eleven-bottle tasting is a little much by myself. Derek and I, perhaps, but by myself is arguably OTT.) What dates work, excluding the last weekend of January and the first ten days of February?

did warre declare a 48?

The 63 looks readily available too, as does a 63 Fonseca.

Oh, you don’t want to drink that stuff you have organic chemistry exams. Revision is very important, you know. :-)

LadyR and I will visit the former colonies of New Amsterdam somewhere in April (most possibly starting April 16th until April 22nd or 23rd). And, of course, we're most interested in an offline.

As for themes: 1977 has recently been done, and Graham is not a personal favourite, so we would have a distinct preference for a 'classic year - classic shipper' theme. We would be most happy to adopt a bottle or two from the given line-up.

It won’t be adoptions. I’m bringing all or nearly all, with costs being split.

Suits me perfectly. :)

I'll inform LadyR that Liver-Training needs to be done beforehand.

I doubt it needs to be said, but if one or more tastings are held I'd look forward to attending :)
Cost-split sounds like the ideal approach, if a bottle needs to be brought in from outside your collection (to complete a tasting set) that can just be factored in.

Also, if you are not fond of Graham, then a suitable way should be found for it to make it to a tasting (thus avoiding your having to transport it AND drink it).

Might I also propose we do some drinkings, instead of just tastings, where the goal would be to have a fun evening together (with port being a primary beverage) rather than a scientific trial between purple adversaries :)

But a tasting is ‟a fun evening together”.

Weekends generally work best for me. Right now, Mon/Tues?Wed evenings work but not Thurs/Fri. I do not have my mid-week schedule yet for next term. I am very interested in knowing once the date is set for jdaw's tastings. Meanwhile, see you Nov 22nd! :)

One of the possibilities not favoured in this thread is now the star of 1977 horizontal in New York: version 2.

There is one more possible theme that comes out of Julian's American stash: a Graham vertical. I have 1a number of the years that Julian does not have starting with 1963. As Graham is my favorite house, this would be of great interest to me.

And the last of the possibilities listed in the first post is now the star of Graham vertical in New York.

Maybe. Possibly. Probably. And family Paris more likely than the UK.

But New York tastings will continue, driven forward by g-man and the crew.

Having now finally pulled out next year's date book, I see that I will have to pass on April 18.
