1966 Quinta do Noval vintage port

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

Decanted for 3 days. Mahogany red in colour, with a pale rim. Very mature on the nose, full of dates and prunes. Very thick in texture in the mouth, rich and full of sweet stewed fruit but showing signs of having been open for too long - spirity and a little flabby, but this is very quaffable port. 85/100.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

I didn't take a note on this one but had a glass at Tom's while we were decanting the other wines. It was much better than I remember this wine's showing at the 1966 horizontal earlier this year and, as AHB has said, a great quaffer.

I was not greatly wowed by this at all for the first couple of days, and at D + 48 felt that it was bland, lacking in composure and too much like a tawny. Come D + 72 it had found some character and integration however. At best, 7-6

This was giving off lots of signs of full maturity: light in colour and with dried fruits on the nose. A very pleasant way to start the evening.
