1988 Chateau Mouton Rothschild

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

A half bottle was opened at short notice as a continuation of Christmas (and employment) celebrations.

Deep red in colour, showing no signs of tiring or being too old. On the nose is the typical and wonderful farmyard smell mixed in with the blackcurrant of ripe cabernet sauvignon. Beautiful balance in the mouth; full, fruity and with so many layers of flavour. The fierce tannins which caused some experts to speculate that this wine would never come round are now fully integrated and very smooth. A wonderful aftertaste, not huge but long lasting and very rewarding. This is superb wine and absolutely at its peak - but with no signs of moving off its plateau. Very good. 92/100. Drunk 27/12/08.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.
