1994 Graham

Post by SushiNorth »

Tasted at a vertical of drinkable Graham's Vintage Ports from the past 50 years, held on the ever auspicious Friday the Thirteenth (February 2009) and hosted graciously by jfacciol.

Graham’s 1994: decanted 9:45am. At D+0 back-purple, but not maximum opacity say 75%ile. Very closed nose, making me pleased with the decision to decant early. To taste initial astringent tannins, then sweetness and good length. Will be better later today.

Graham’s 1994: too young, showing strong tannin. And lighter than it should have been. I had expected a powerhouse of a wine, but this was mid-weight at best. Is there a risk that 1994 fails to deliver on its promises?

I had a similar experience 3 or 4 years ago. Tasted this port blind, and guessed it to be either from a not so good vintage or a good LBV.

Nose of freshly ground black pepper with black currant fruits.

Definite black pepper on the attack, one can totally taste the youth.

Olives, black/blue berries but only a medium weight wine, with a raisiny after taste that lasts for 30 seconds.

I took the bottle home,

tried some tonight 40 hours later.

Wow what a difference. Heavy uncouth thick, rich dark black peppered blue berries with a hint of black licorice in the back. This is a monster of a port.

What the hell happened at our tasting?!?!

I'm still enjoying the sip of this wine. I forgot to mention a beautiful dark chocolate finish of 45 seconds.

I would say 40 hours of decant is perfect for this port

bar steward...

That is what I was expecting from this vintage. Must be in a weird phase for this bottle. At least the promise is there of what should be expected.

+9 Translucent, semi clear and the color of Garnet. There's caramel and cherry in the nose, a cola sort of flavor (thanks steph). That cola continues in the mouth, with caramel, anise, more tannins coming in. Does that make it flat cherry cola? It's a bit light in the tail. There's enough intensity for a good future, but it's going to take time to work out these odd flavors. 87
