NV Chancellor Tawny 10YO

Post by morteno »

My local supermarket had this one on sale in December (for what used to be £8, at that time probably £12). Anyhow, it's one of the cheapest 10 year old tawnies I've seen (Kopke being among them). Price is important here as it isn't that interesting.

Some of my friends really enjoyed what was left of it on Super Bowl Sunday. One month of airing hadn't harmed it. It's sweet, caramel-like, slightly nutty, and has a nice brown colour. And that's that. I might buy it again just to have something to drink when friends are visiting but I thought it was a bit boring. Alright, but a bit bland. I should have bought 2-3 as it would've been nice to have a couple in backup for that price and to serve for frinds who don't really dig port.

I'm sure it won't win a large audience among you TPF'ers.

As a side note: I saw today that the very same Supermarket had Chancellor's (2003?) VP too, farily priced too. I wonder in which other countries you can find the brand. As I wasn't that impressed with the 10 year old, I didn't buy the VP.

I haven’t come across Chancellor before. Do you still have the bottle? It would be interesting to see whether ‟Chancellor” is just the name and it is produced by someone else. (Somewhat worryingly the only references I can find on the internet point to it being an American ‟port”: http://www.nashobawinery.com/wines/chancellor.html  )

Morteno, have a look on the bottle and see who produces this. It might actually be a good buy.

Unfurtunately, I don't keep drunk bottles. I'll have to look at a bottle the next time I see it in the supermarket. I can say that the label was very non-port like. Just a front label (IIRC) that was short and wide and with a "posh" font and design. If it has to look like that, I prefer the Otima design by far.

Googling "chancellor" produces very few, if any, usable results. I was worried about the American reference too . But I must say that if it is indeed an American port, then it's pretty far in taste from the few other American ports I've tried -- positively meant.

As you bought it inside the EU, I suppose it's unlikely that it is an American bottle because of the protected status of the word "port", but I suppose the key question is whether it had a selo or not?

This is indeed the real deal. Chancellor is produced by Pocas, which is carried by on of the large supermarkets (Irma) in Denmark, but not the same as the supermarket that sells Pocas (Super Brugsen). This must be a marketing trick of some sort as Coop Danmark owns both Irma and Super Brugsen.

It's all the same. I've had bland Port only from both brands. Cheap and bland seems to be their recipe.

But Pocas' Vintage Port is actually quite good! Especially in recent years. Their 2000 and 2003 were lovely.
Chancellor is quite likely a different blend so may not be of the same quality.

How should this appear in the TN index? Under Poças?

My suggestion would be that it should be shown under Pocas - but don't lose the link to Chancellor so that we can also search the TN database for Chancellor and then discover that this is made by Pocas. I see a similarity with Dalva's use of Presidential as a marketing brand in the US.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Please confirm that you want to rename Poças to something like ‟Poças, aka Chancellor”.

I would suggest "Pocas {with cidilla added}, including brand name of Chancellor"

We should do something similar for Dalva / Da Silva / Presidential.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

I would suggest: "NV Poças Chancellor 10 year old tawny"

So a different house to plain Poças? Not merged with it?

No. Listed as a separate wine along with the other Poças styles/brands. Like this...
Poças vintage port Poças LBV Poças tawny

So you want ‟Chancellor” to be part of the age designation?! (And it isn’t a style either: ‟vintage port”, ‟LBV”, and ‟tawny” are all terms applicable to many other houses. ‟Chancellor” is not.)

I now see your problem. Will contemplate and return with another suggestion.

Take a look at what you have done with Croft Distinction and Croft Platinum and then do the same with this?
