Very dark, almost black. A raw young smell. Nice weight but fell away very quickly into nothing. No finish to speak of. Others suggested that this was a fine example of a VP that is completely closed down. I hope they are right as the colour, nose and initial mouthfeel suggest that this could be a great wine for the long haul.

Re: 1991 Taylor's Quinta de Vargellas
Deep, dark red. Completely opaque. A nose full of sweet violets, of seaside pine trees and blueberries on the hill. The blueberries come through very strongly on the palate, with a surplus of fruit over tannins but there is never any doubt that the tannins are in this wine. Big in the mouth, but a much smaller aftertaste than is expected. 86/100. Drunk 24 March 2009.

The most concentrated wine of the night, and to me, a textbook example of what is meant by the term 'closed'.
At least another decade needed; probably more. Great prospects.
