Decanted 11.00 24/3
Horizontally branded cork which broke. Average amount of lumpy sediment. Light nose, quite pale, but the dregs tasted very nice.
Returned to original bottle after rinsing, and re-corked.

Very dark. Harsh spirity nose. A nice drinking wine with a good weight and a burnt sugar finish.

Re: 1972 Quinta de Vargellas
Light in colour, pale centre, clearly fully mature. Quite empty on the nose, smelling of slightly mouldy or damp raspberries, described by some as cabbage. Sweet but rustic on the nose and a complete contrast in the mouth, where it is refined and structured. Good balance, if a little on the simple side. Much better than the nose woudl lead you to expect. Slightly harsh on the back of the throat, but once this harshness fades this leaves a tannic dryness that is quite enjoyable. 84/100. Drunk 24 March 2009.

I'm wondering if Derek got his glasses muddled here, as I have this down as being easily the palest of them all.
A nicely composed, if lightweight wine; but a clear candidate for a 'drink up' flag on my cellar list (I have three bottles left)
