Julian Farewell, at least for now

Post by jfacciol »

Julian and family will be leaving NYC for Paris in July. We should have a farewell. I propose a port dinner for the weekend of July 9, either Friday or Saturday. I don't know that any theme other than good port makes sense so I propose that we all bring a bottle of our current favorite port. In my case, that would be Graham's 1970.

My home in Brooklyn is available and I am happy to host the event.

May I assume that the invitation extends to the long-suffering missus?

We would be delighted to attend such a dinner, whether on Friday 10th July or on Saturday 11th July 2009. Thank you.

I would be delighted to finally meet the missus. She is, of course, welcome.

Could work for me. Have to run it by Elys and see what's up for that weekend. May bring an odd ball, but good one like 1970 or 1975 Cockburn.

Grammatical faux pas - you used 'good' and '1975' in the same sentence.

Sadly, I will not be able to fly out to New York for this one. However, since I will most assuredly being going out to dinner that weekend to celebrate our anniversary (this will be 22), I will make sure to drink an extra glass of Port in your honor.

'75 Cockburn is suppose to be quite delicate and nice. Haven't picked up my case yet, but it was generally well like at the Cockburn vertical in London... Not saying it's the best by any means, but the '70 Cockburn would be a welcome additiona too.

That 1975 Cockburn:
jdaw1 wrote:1975 Cockburn: much paler than the ’70, but the same hue. Little nose. To taste thin and quite acidic.
DRT wrote:Light colour. Browning. Spirity nose. Light weight, acidic with a watery finish. I was not impressed with this wine and it unfortunately didn't help my ongoing battle to persuade JDAW that 1975 VPs can be worth drinking
AHB wrote:Very light colour, by far the palest of the flight, pale brown. Very light nose of roses and turkish delight. Very simple in the mouth with redcurrants and surprisingly, still some tannins around. A delicate and lingering aftertaste. A very pleasant port, but by no means a "must have". Gained a little weight in the glass over time, but still simple and straightforward. 87/100.

Just basing it on what Sean told me; I wasn't expecting much as I have had my share of '75's before. We got a few cases for song, along with a few cases of Cockburn '70 and bunch of cases of older misc. stuff.

First, I have find out whether I can go, before nitpicking which ports to bring.

I'd prefer Saturday so I am not rushed driving after work. Where would this be held?

I am afraid that, having started this thread, I am going to have to withdraw. I will be away that weekend.

I am sorry to miss Julian's official send off. My apologies to all.

Actually I believe Julian might be in Paris some time in July for some early apartment hunting.

Can we get Julian to throw out some dates too?

Jay, can you also do the same?

Would July 18th weekend work?

I return from the old world 1st July. The 18th is probably OK though we might fly very shortly after.

I will already be in Paris in July but might be back in time to be able to make it July 18 thought not 100% sure. I want to wish Julian the very best just in case I do not get to see him in July. He has been very gracious to come speak about Port at the culinary school as well. Everybody learned a great deal from you. Thank you!

I may actually be able to make it (assuming the work trip happens and I fly back on the 17th); the 25th wouldn't work for me, btw.

Thank you all for trying to accomodate me. But I am withdrawing completely. You should decide on what date suits other folks.

I have a trial to prepare for during the first half of July and don't have time or energy for a tasting.

Jay: this was your idea, to be in your home, and a final opportunity for you to meet my wife.

I’m on a plane on the 16th of June. Can we do this before then? Alas late July will be too late: I’m probably gone.
