2007 Quinta do Crasto

Post by JacobH »

Consumed on 20 May 2009 at The Crusted Pipe in a "bring a bottle to share" and 2007 Horizontal offline.

One of 5 samples of the 2007 Vintage tasted in the mini-offline. The tasting was carried out "double blind" (unusually in the scientific sense, as the test administrator, AHB, did not know what he was administrating to us). Hopefully Derek still has the key of which letters was allocated to which shipper :).

The original title of this thread is/was 2007 "B" Vintage Port. Once the shipper is disclosed, it will be renamed.

B was dreadful. Muted and tight, there was little on the nose and less on the palate. A bit of a tannic structure but not a great deal and more worrying was a complete lack of fruit. Although I have no experience of this sort of thing, I can't see this developing into anything great...Though, due to my lack of experience, I hope that I am proven wrong with time!

[Anyone like to take a bet that I've just been defaming the Vargellas Vihna Velha?]

Just got also a portion of B (WS1 brought a little flask to Germany).

The nose is very fruity but the palatte is awfull.

WS1 want to get to the next bottle. I agree.

Nose: Weak and poor

Colour: Pale, similar to 'A'

Palate: Lacking in composure, unimpressive

Conclusion: Bit of a mess

Best guess: Very hard to say. A hint of the Fonseca signature came to mind, but that could easily be a red herring

I found this to be very spirity on the nose, and very dry to taste. Some fruits but quite "thin" generally. Not a wine I would immediately seek out to buy.

AHB, here wrote:b - Crasto (note that when I was tasting the cask sample, this took over 24 hours to show what it has to offer so I believe that its poor showing at TCP could be due to us simply not giving it the time it needed to shaw what it could deliver)

must say I was not at all a fan of sample B. Based on Alex coments I guess it may have been a bad bottle

very dark colour, taste was rather thin and very sweet, not really interesting. Over the next couple of days this stayed as uninteressting as it was in the beginning I am afraid to say.
