1970 Fonseca

Post by jdaw1 »

1970 Fonseca, part of an at-home mini-vertical of ’66, ’70, ’85. At D+0 plum-rich nose, and a huge mouth-filling never-ending flavour full of everything one would want from an F70. Plums, mostly. No pepper. Slightly marred (at D+0, mind) by a hint of sourness mid-palate, which I suspect and hope will fade.

Wife: ‟ooh, this one is better [than the ’66]”; ‟there’s something raspberry-like in there”;

JDAW: I find this a hint less full than the ’66. In this vertical, for me at least, two-thirds of evil is 100% pleasure.

Placemats (the wife liked the flowers, though doubted whether they would feature in a placemat used by ‟male port friends”).

F70: From my notes on paper, which probably overlap with the above.

Redder and younger-looking than the ’66, and more nose than the ’66. Dominant smell is sweetness, with red fruit. It bites the side of the tongue: pepper and heat. A hint light at the end, but that’s only relative. Lovely. Later: ‟pepper sensation gaining ground”.

Fonseca heaven.

sweet cinnamon plums with a touch of raisin.. no signs of heat at all on the nose.

heavier then the 66, black licorice purple fruit with a blackberry kirsch flavor on the palate that ends in a black crushed pepper with spicy cedar finish .

The sample was refridgerated immediately after decanting Saturday lunch, and mailed Monday morning.

I had only three sample bottles left, and as Jeff posted in the TN threads, Jeff won the ’66 and ’70, whereas SushiNorth must make do with only the younger.

heh - I also have a backlog of sample bottles which I hope to rectify soon. Thanks for sending this, Julian.

Retrieved from the mailbox Wednesday at 5pm (been in there 6 hrs then) and refrigerated until later in the evening; brought to room temp and enjoyed from Port tasting glass

F70 - a lot of stink coming off the nose (jeff later suggested i try a larger mouthed glass - back to brandy?), but clearly some fruit underneath. Great color, with some browns when i hold the bottle to the light. In the mouth, I also find that sour section in the middle, but enjoyed the early raisins and plums. Smoked cedar (which was the first clearly distinguishable thing for me) mixed in both with the fruits and again in the tail, which was nice but I wanted it to last even longer.

FYI, i've noticed in a number of samples that I've been getting what I can only call a "bottle stink" nose. It's come from hand delivered and mailed samples. I'll be sending some out shortly and we'll see if it's just my sniffer.

In reading everyone else's notes, i think what is interesting is how tough it was to pick one or two fruits for that flavor. I agree with julian on licorice dark fruits, i was thinking licorice but couldn't pin it down. Raspberry, maybe, but again it wasn't quite that either. Someone ought to define the Port berry.

+ 30 secs ... Mmm, big mouthful of portberries. ;)
