1970 Dow

Post by jdaw1 »

Dow 1970, first of a dozen bought at Bonhams earlier this year. Room-temperature bottle decanted 4pm; 40% stored in a decanter at room temperature for consumption tonight, the remainder in a decanter in the cellar for tomorrow. Cork extracted whole, and its brand matching the label and the capsule.

D+0. Brick-red mid-translucent red. Looking fine. To taste sweet for a Dow, acidity quite prominent, and somewhat closed. Bodes well but needing time.

Dow 1970, at D+6h. bright red; nose of cherry and tannin; in mouth acidity still strong. Youthful; mouthful of sweetness; very long with red fruit.

Wife said ‟barbe à papa”, that being ‟cotton candy” = candy floss. On nose she said ‟bacon” (!), that being attributed to ‟smokiness”. I thought the smoke very slight.

Father said ‟quite tart”. My step-mother ‟rich mellow good porty taste to it”.

None of these comments were wrong.

Following day decanter rescued from cool cellar at about 2pm, and drunk at 9pm. Very similar, but with strawberries replacing the cherries. With less acidity it would be an outstanding port; even with, lovely.
