New quizz

Prattle on about anything to do about Port.

New quizz

Postby Axel P » 20:24 Fri 09 Oct 2009

I just managed to fly over the Douro valley as some might have imagined from my avatar and was able to take some pics from above. I thought it might be a source for the next Port quizz. Since sometimes it would get too easy I will just put some parts of the photo online. Here is number one and its all yours:

Well, I thought it was clear: Which quinta is it?

Nope, further to the east. That is why I put the 180 turn of the river in the first pic. The douro in Portugal does this only around one quinta. I would say it is the furthest (or at least one of them) to the east.

Bingo, Jacob. Although Vale Meao does not get much attention in Port, I do believe that they are doing very good right now.

Here is the next one:

I think I’ve worked this one out, but only after playing with Google Maps which is probably cheating! I’ll leave it to someone else who might have actually visited the quinta :-)

although it's hard to see the actual quinta, it does look a lot like Tedo and the River Torta next to it. But I'm not sure, As I don't recall that jetty of land sitcking so far out into the river. And there is a road on the other side of the Torta that leads to Niepoort's quintas. But the pic isn't clear enough to tell.

Axel, In a previous life I was a US Marine Corps officer. I've got a soft spot for men and machines of war.

One fond memory I have from the first Gulf War was British and Saudi Tornados flying about 50 feet above my position at the Kuwaiti border on their way to bomb targets . Nearly gave me a heart attack every time they suddenly flashed by, so fast and low.

Unfortunately they took unacceptable casualties down low and had to revert to medium altitude bombing after a couple weeks. But God they were glorious down there, blowing through like some hell sent demons, leaving shattered eardrums and a trail of dust. Incredible.

This gives a sense of what I am talking about. It is a smaller plane and not as fast as the Tornado, but similar.
