Re: 1963 Martinez
Opened now,
tawnyish in color with a very slight hint of red left.
nose of a very delicate light brown sugar and strawberries no hint of heat at all.
deceivingly heavy and spirity on the palate and picks up more and more weight in your mouth.
full, lush, menthol, slight nuttiness, dried orange peels and marmalade.

Did not relent at dinner, with people commenting that this tastes more like an excellent tawny then a vintage port.
It's got starting to pick up the tawny characteristics but has some smoothness and complexity on the body to keep it a vintage.
That being said, still very spirity even at the end of the meal. A bottle that probably has seen better days but still makes for some very good quaffing.
Very excellent with the sauteed onions and burger.

A very nice wine, but a bit over the hill for VP. Spirity nose (tiny bit of chocolate) that subdued over the course of the evening, with a light strawberry color and hint of bricking. Chocolate and fruit in the mouth, followed by caramel and vanilla in the tail. I believe John ID'd orange peel and i agree. It is a bit like a tawny, but with a big body. 91, and it went best with the caramelized onions and burger.
