1987 Niepoort Vintage Port

Post by Axel P »

Tasted within the Niepoort Range on Nov 27th with Dirk Niepoort:

Outstandingly young colour with a very good structure. Fresh bouquet with pepper and some spices. The palate showed an amazing grip with herbs, pepper and a very good complexity, slight tannins and acidity noticeable. Long aftertaste with some acidity still present.

Not the blockbuster, but very interesting. One that sticks out of the crowd.

Dirk compares this with his 1970.

Nose: a tight but very pleaseant nose

taste: very spicy, nice length

This port starts to make fun.

Cant say I'd put this quite in the same league as the 70, but I see what DrDirk is getting at.
The 87 presents itself in an uncomplicated, pleasant phase that makes for extremely enjoyable drinking right now. Impression of citrussy fruit, good body and length. For Niepoort this is a particular success for the vintage, and IMO on a par with Vargellas and Guimaraens.
Cheers, victor
