2001 Quinta do Crasto Vintage Port

Post by angeleyes »

Sainsbury BOB.

Cork came out cleanly, and in good condition.

Decanted, very fine sediment.

Deep purple/red, opaque in the centre.

Syrah-like blackberry nose, very evident heat.

Thick in the mouth, grippy tannins, but heat, heat, heat on the finish. Some liquorice there too. Hopefully the alcohol will blow off given time.

Most of the excess heat has blown off, leaving a pleasant strong and sweet nose of liquorice and fennel. However in the mouth these flavours are much lighter than the nose would have you believe. Some good acidity. Tannins are still evident, but so is the heat - though it finishes quicker and is much less burning than last night, leaving the liquorice last to fade. I think this wine will need some more years as it's a bit disjointed, and there are flavours hidden away in there somewhere that may reveal themselves given time.

The nose has turned to blackberries and mint, with the liquorice in the background. Clean blackberry flavours in the mouth, still reasonably thick, but it's starting to fade. Tannins have disappeared leaving a smooth finish with a touch of acidity and good sweetness. Heat better integrated now.
