1927 Taylor vintage port

Post by Alex Bridgeman »

One of a bottle of 5 acquired as a lot of unknown 1927 port at auction. Initially, on decanting this was a deep red colour and had a very thick texture; rich and full in flavour and with a good length.

On serving 3 hours later, this wine had flattened and developed an incredible nose of fresh cut mushrooms. What a disappointment. NR. Drunk 17 Dec 2009.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.

2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

What a downer! Next time; pop and pour! Was it a cork issue that blossomed with air?

My opinion was that it was a cork issue that became apparent with air, but I should note that few other people at the table agreed with me. Most thought it a wonderful wine. It did have a magnificent colour and promised so much on decanting - but such is the life of a port geek.

I didn't find such a pronounced scent of mushrooms as AHB but do agree that it was disappointingly flat considering the vibrancy of its colour (and its pedigree). I think I guessed this was a much younger Port from a second-tier shipper. I was a bit surprised that others rated it so highly but glad that they enjoyed it so much!

Young red. Heat; lots of spice; and strawberry. W55? No: T27!

Others had problems later. For reasons not explained by modern science, the contents of my glass had evaporated before then.
