1994 Quinta do Vesuvio

Post by DRT »

Tasted as part of a Vesuvio Vertical from 1989 to 2008 at The New Cavendish Club, London on 23rd February 2010.
*Please note that the 2008 Cask Sample was donated to this tasting by the Symington family before the final blend was complete so this may not accurately represent what the Vesuvio 2008 will be, should it be approved and declared later in 2010.

A step darker than the older wines (particularly the '91 and '92). Massive and spectacular on the nose; full of fruit. Tastes even more massive than the nose and colour would indicate. Oldest Vesuvio still to have a noticeable tannic backbone. Extremely well rounded and balanced; absolutely stunning Port.

Ok -- NOW we're talking.

On the nose, this to me IS the color purple. Everything I know about the color purple, from my earliest memories from childhood came through on the nose. Purple crayons from pre-school in particular. Great structure, balance, vigor, and intensity throughout. This is what great port should taste like.

Lovely fruity nose. Plums, blackberries and molases on the palate with powder-dry tannins and a huge long complex finish. Brilliant port.

V94: Black, and nosing of blackcurrant. To taste big black hedgerow fruit, and very sweet. Just like a 1994. Ending weaker than start (just like a ’94!). Lovely. RLC rightly suggested ‟Christmas cake”.
