2006 Quinta do Vesuvio

Post by DRT »

2006 Quinta do Vesuvio (Magnum)
Tasted as part of a Vesuvio Vertical from 1989 to 2008 at The New Cavendish Club, London on 23rd February 2010.
*Please note that the 2008 Cask Sample was donated to this tasting by the Symington family before the final blend was complete so this may not accurately represent what the Vesuvio 2008 will be, should it be approved and declared later in 2010.

Darker, again, than the 2005. Very grappy and youthful on the nose. Nicely rounded and fruity in the mouth, followed by a huge tannic grip. Quite hard to drink after the first mouthful.

This was difficult for me to drink, especially as late in the evening as it was. I thought this was closed, tannic, and generally bland. Not one of the stars of the night, but difficult to judge based on the hour, the fact that this was a mag, and just how young it is.

My first taste of the wine produced from the lagar that AHB, Andy V, Christopher, Roy and I had our feet in during the 2006 harvest. 88)

I was surprised at how approachable this was. Perhaps it hasn't closed down yet and is still going through that "drink me now if you're American" phase?

I can say with some confidence that this is a wine that some of us will be able to watch grow up and evaluate on a regular basis over a long period of time.

V06: squid ink. Still rough; alcohol prominent.
