1999 Quinta do Vesuvio

Post by DRT »

Tasted as part of a Vesuvio Vertical from 1989 to 2008 at The New Cavendish Club, London on 23rd February 2010.
*Please note that the 2008 Cask Sample was donated to this tasting by the Symington family before the final blend was complete so this may not accurately represent what the Vesuvio 2008 will be, should it be approved and declared later in 2010.

Touch darker than the '99. Quite a lot of fruit on the nose but more subdued than the major declared years. Bit of fruit in the mouth, too, though not as exciting or complex as the major years.

Pretty rich and giving port, but a bit angular and surprisingly difficult to enjoy. Would like to taste again in 5+ years.

Young and raw on the nose. Quite harsh, acidic and disjointed on the palate. This wine seems to have characteristics that are "too young" for its age. Is it going through some sort of teenage crisis a little early? I am intrigued to see how this develops and if I had to splash out a few quid on some Vesuvio right now I think this is the one I would buy.

V99: opaque, with a red edge. Nose much tankier and younger than the V98. Taste also tanky, with verdict ‟too young to tell”.
