2003 Niepoort

Post by DRT » 22:33 Sat 13 Mar 2010

Served blind at this off-line at the Crusting Pipe, London, on 9th March 2010.

The ports: Wines marked "*" were purchase on the night at TCP due to a world record consumption of 1 bottle each in less than 2 hours, which included dinner

A very young, purple, glass-staining baby. The tannins kick in immediately...

I nailed this as Niepoort 2003 almost immediately and seem to have stopped taking a note!

The guesses:
  • DJP: Vesuvio 2003 (1 points)
  • RLC: Vesuvio Capela 2007 (0 points)
  • WS1: Niepoort 2007 (1 point)
  • CSD: brought this bottle (0 points)
  • AHB: Croft 2003 (1 points)
  • DRT: Niepoort 2003 (2 points)
  • MKD: 2007 (0 points)
Group score: 5/12

Notes left at the table.

From memory- ink-stainingly young. Seemed to be closing up.

What was left in the bottle (as opposed to on my right leg) I quite enjoyed. Clearly a tannic monster, but showing good balance and structure, albeit a bit closed on the palate. Of all the wines consumed this evening, this will likely be the only one I will be seeking more bottles of. 86 for drinking now (92-94 potential)
