Emergency off-line: London, 17th March 2010

Post by DRT »

I have just realised I will be staying overnight in London on 17th March (i.e. Wednesday!) and have not arranged to meet any port chums in the evening. Please, can anyone help salvage this situation?

I think it is perhaps too much to ask to have a horizontal of 25 bottles of 1815 Vintage Port at this short notice so would suggest this could be a "bring anything you can so long as it's Port" night.

Any takers?

That’s a shame. I’ve just put an 1815 on death row: I suppose it can be drunk in Paris.

Usual business. Feel free to pre-announce what you’re bringing.

There is a very good chance of my attendance...shall we do blind tasting as our last attempt at guessing anywhere near what we were drinking recently was a disaster...so some of us had to resort to good old detective work...OK I cheated  ....but none the less still had a chance og getting it wrong..and I did not have to own up..

Done. I will book the Boardroom for 18:30 if possible.

Blind suits me fine.

Any more or is it just Chris, Cookie and I who are willing to step up to the plate?

Well lads, we gave it a decent go. Very nice to meet Tom for the first time, but three out of four bottles being flawed/off is thankfully an unusual event.

1985 Quinta do Noval: Cloudy, with a very light, almost watery rim and TONS of loose sediment. Drinkable, and not at all without life, but very clearly defective. (Flawed)

1966 Fonseca: Wonderful nose -- starting out almost like cactus in arizona, but quickly migrating to cinnamon, clove, and just a drop of butterscotch. Pretty light and astringent on the mid-palate, and the finish was harsh, disjointed, and alcoholic. Again, not undrinkable, but clearly not representative. A great pity. (Flawed)

2000 Quarrles Harris: Not very good at all, I'm afraid. Some spices and plums on the nose, but this was flat and uninteresting. I have no experience with QH, but given my experience with the 2000 vintage so far, I'm hoping this bottle was flawed. (Flawed)

1983 Offley: the de facto wine of the night, this was actually a pretty solid effort, to its credit. A bit of chocolate on the nose, with good structure in place and a fairly well-balanced profile. Not something to write home about IMHO, but a great bottle for casual consumption (86pts)

On to Malvedos!

Hi there,

Sorry I could not make it due to other appointment. This sounds like a sad evening - so many flawed bts. Hope at least it was funny and you came up with interesting stories like damps suits, girls tasting or something. :)

regards
