1964 Vargellas
Decanted from a bottle with a very hard, but seemingly sound cork. At D+1 this was a deep, rich red with a slight hint of bricking on the rim. A lively nose, full of Christmas Pine and violets. Surprisingly sweet entry, with a huge range of secondary flavours. Very big and flavoursome; still noticeably tannic. The aftertaste is big, slightly bitter and of considerable length. A very impressive port, with many years of life ahead of it. 91/100.
Top Ports in 2023: Taylor 1896 Colheita, b. 2021. A perfect Port.
2024: Niepoort 1900 Colheita, b.1971. A near perfect Port.

Re: 1964 Vargellas
Yum! I am eager to open my bottle, but alas it must wait until an appropriate birthday.
I have a Fonseca Guimaraens, a Graham's Malvedos, and a Taylor's Vargellas currently slated for 50, 55, and 60 respectively. Does that seem reasonable based on your recent experiences with the Malvedos and Vargellas?
(I have a Nacional for 65 or my retirement party, whichever comes later.)

Is there space at that table for a previous owner?Glenn E. wrote:(I have a Nacional for 65 or my retirement party, whichever comes later.)

I believe that your presence will be necessary for the event to be complete!DRT wrote:Is there space at that table for a previous owner?Glenn E. wrote:(I have a Nacional for 65 or my retirement party, whichever comes later.)

In my humble opinion, I think this particular bottle of Vargellas is probably absolutely at its peak. It has a wonderful mIx of fruit and maturity. It will still be very good in 15 years time, but I would be very tempted to open this bottle first in 2014.
