1989 Marks and Spencer LBV

Post by angeleyes »

1989 Morgan (Marks and Spencer BOB) LBV
Dark but a dull ruby, showing some age. Like a good standard of LBV with the usual dark fruits, herbs and chocolate on the nose - but a touch dusty. Some hint of age - there's a little marzipan showing - though it seems very young for its actual age. A bit sugary, but a good balance of acidity to go with it. Quite long finish of brown sugar, blackberries with a little marzipan. Very drinkable.

Mark,

Did you buy this recently? I haven't seen it in M&S and would be keen to try it. What was the price?

A few months ago through ebay of all places - the seller happened to live nearby; gave her a tenner for it. Has the St Michael labelling so presumably was only in the shops within a year or two of bottling (1995).

Despite the spiel on the bottle saying to drink within 1 year of purchase, this is almost certainly better after more than a decade past its recommended drink-by date - though it may well have been better 5 years ago. 2 days later and it's still holding up nicely - lightened up slightly now and showing some heat and bitter chocolate. A light, uncomplicated and easy-drinking Port.
